9/9/2023 0 Comments Molecular vs ionic![]() ![]() Ionic compounds are (usually) formed when a metal reacts with a nonmetal (or a Polyatomic ion - Wikipedia). ![]() A van der Waals bond occurs due to the attraction of charge-polarized molecules and is considerably weaker than ionic or covalent bonds. A covalent bond occurs when two or more atoms share electrons. Ionic and molecular (covalent) compounds also look different at the microscopic level: covalent and molecular compounds exist in molecules, while ionic compounds are organized in. An ionic bond forms when an electron transfers from one atom to another. Molecular compounds are electrically neutral. Chemical bonds are formed when atoms lose, gain, or share valence electrons to completely fill their outermost electron shell. Types of Bonds Chemical units form by many different kinds of chemical bonds. To help show this three-dimensional shape even more accurately, we can rely on space-filling models as well as ball-and-stick models. Covalent or molecular compounds form when elements share electrons in a covalent bond to form molecules. A covalent bond is a type of bond that occurs between two nonmetals. Molecular compounds are compounds made up of nonmetals. An Ionic bond is a type of bond that forms between a metal and a non-metal. We will discuss the significance of these electrons at the end of this section. Ionic compounds are composed of positive and negative ions held together by ionic bonds. The two dots above nitrogen indicate a lone pair of electrons that are not involved in any covalent bond. However, in the more detailed structural formula on the right, we have a dashed line to indicate that the rightmost hydrogen atom is sitting behind the plane of the screen, while the bold wedge indicates that the center hydrogen is sitting out in front of the plane of the screen. ![]() In the structural formula to the left, we are only seeing a two-dimensional approximation of this molecule. Covalent Bond: a bond in which a pair or pairs of electrons is shared by two atoms. Keep in mind, however, that atoms and molecules, just like everything else in the universe, exist in three dimensions-they have length and width, as well as depth. There are 3 types of intramolecular bonds: covalent, ionic, and metallic. From both of these structural formulas, we can see that the central nitrogen atom is connected to each hydrogen atom by a single covalent bond. ![]()
